The Burdekin Shire is the sugar capital of Australia and one of the most productive agricultural regions in the country. It is renowned for its vast water resources which make it one of the safest regions in which to farm, live and invest. While sugar production is the main industry, the Burdekin is also a major producer of mangoes and horticultural produce. The shire has a population of about 18,500, spread over the two main towns of Ayr and Home Hill, several small townships and hundreds of farming properties. Ayr and Home Hill are only 12km apart and are connected by the landmark Burdekin River Bridge. The district’s other claims to fame are its friendly residents, fantastic fishing and laidback lifestyle.
Mayor, Lyn McLaughlin will formally open the Welcome Reception on Tuesday evening of the 20th September. She will then join the conference delegates throughout the conference program.
The Burdekin Shire Council will also be a contributor to the Junior Landcare Conference. |
